February WRBG Event: Two Darwin-Adjacent Books in the Rare Book & Special Collections Division
February 22 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmFree
The Washington Rare Book Group invites you to join us for our next virtual lunchtime lecture:
Two Darwin-Adjacent Books in the Rare Book & Special Collections Division
by Monica Varner
Tuesday, February 22, 12pm
The Families of Plants, a 1787 English translation of Linneas’ Genera Plantarum, was sent by its editor to Benjamin Franklin.
Arte de la lengua general del reyno de Chile, a 1765 Spanish-Mapuche dictionary published in Lima, was purchased in 1835 by Captain Robert FitzRoy during a naval expedition.
What do these entirely different books have in common?
Monica Varner, reference assistant in the Rare Book & Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress, will discuss her provenance research on these two volumes in the Rare Book Collection and their unexpected connection.
There will be a Q&A session at the end of the talk.
Even though there is no cost for this event, please RSVP by February 21st so we can send you an email with login instructions prior to the event. The Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants within 24 hours of the program.
We hope you will join us!
Amanda Zimmerman, WRBG President
