From Wood to Wonder: Block Books in the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection

November 22, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

Monday, November 22, 2021 at noon.

A singular feature of fifteenth-century northern European public textual culture, “block books” were crafted from blocks of carved wood stamped onto paper and often hand-colored. Filled with arresting iconography and crudely carved text,
these works occupy a distinctive place in history of western reading practices. The Washington Rare Book Group (WRBG) invites you to join Marianna Stell and Stephanie Stillo from the Rare Book & Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress for a virtual introduction to specific examples of block books from the Rosenwald Collection.

PLEASE NOTE: Even though there is no cost for this event, members must RSVP by
November 21st so we can send you an email with login instructions prior to the event.
The Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants within 24 hours of the program.
We hope you will join us!

– Amanda Zimmerman, WRBG President
