The Secrets of the Smithsonian
Tuesday, May 21st, 2019 at the Busboys and Poets “U Street Corridor” location at 14th and V Streets NW, (2021 14th St. NW, Washington, DC 20009,) at 11:30 a.m.
Our speaker, Nancy E. Gwinn, PhD, has been at the Smithsonian Libraries for 35 years, serving as Director since 1997. She is a recognized leader in international librarianship and in building collaborations and partnerships, serving on the governing board of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA, 2004-2009) and chairing various sections.
A former Fulbright scholar at the University of Oxford in England, Gwinn holds a doctorate in American civilization from George Washington University, a Master’s in library science from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wyoming, which also awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2013.
At the Smithsonian, during her tenure the Libraries grew to 21 branches, initiated the international digital Biodiversity Heritage Library, and participated in a major capital campaign. Nancy will speak on “The Secrets of the Smithsonian.” Variously referred to as the “Nation’s Attic” or “Octopus on the Mall,” the Institution is 173 years old and has become the world’s largest museum complex, comprising 19 museums, 21 research libraries, and the National Zoo. Dr. Gwinn will share some of its fascinating stories.
Important agenda item: The lunch will also constitute the Group’s Annual Meeting, including the election of officers for the coming year. We welcome self-nominations from the membership for the Executive Board. If you are interested in serving, please submit your name to Bill or Amanda. If you are not interested in being an officer, but would like to help with programming, we welcome your assistance. We meet as a group a few times a year to discuss and arrange programs.
The event will begin with a cash bar at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 12:00 noon. The cost of the lunch will be $25.00.
Please RSVP and pay through our online system. If you have any problems, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org .
