The WASHINGTON RARE BOOK GROUP

invites you to join us for

The Pioneering Book Designs of Sarah Wyman Whitman: an illustrated lecture

by Leslie Long

Tuesday, February 26th, 11:30 am

Rosenwald Room (LJ205)
Thomas Jefferson Building, Library of Congress

Sarah Wyman Whitman (1842-1904) is a highly regarded book designer of her day.  In her own words, “You have got to think how to apply elements of design to these cheaply sold books; to put the touch of art on this thing that is going to be produced at a level price, which allows for no handwork, the decoration to be cut with a die, the books to go out by the thousand and to be sold at a low price … What I feel is that under these conditions, the more necessary it is to design covers well because they are really like aesthetic tracts. They go everywhere.”

There will be several examples of Whitman’s work from the Library of Congress Rare Book Collection on display.

Leslie Long, our speaker, has been working in library preservation for thirty-five years.  She earned her MLIS with a specialization in library conservation from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999.  She has worked for the Library of Congress Collections Care Section for the past eighteen years.  She is especially interested in nineteenth and early twentieth century book designers and has previously given talks on Margaret Armstrong and William Addison Dwiggins.

After the lecture the group will go to the Madison Café on the 6th floor of the Madison Building for lunch, and we hope you can join us.

DIRECTIONS: The Rosenwald Room, LJ205, is directly across the hall from the Rare Book Reading Room on the second floor of Thomas Jefferson Building, First Street, S.E., between Independence Avenue and East Capitol Street. The closest metro stop is Capitol South. Please be aware that Library of Congress security requires that you walk through a metal detector and have your bags x-rayed.

If you can, please plan to let us know if you can attend by RSVPing below! We look forward to seeing you all there!
