WRBG April Event: Tour of the NMAAHC

April 25, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

The WASHINGTON RARE BOOK GROUP invites you to join us in-person for a visit to the Library of the

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE

Please join us for the WRBG’s first-ever visit to the library of the Smithsonian’s new(-ish) National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The group will be limited to 15 people, so sign up soon!

One of 21 libraries in the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives system, the National Museum of African American History and Culture Library is devoted to collecting and providing access to resources that support research in African American history, culture, and the African Diaspora, as well as the Museum’s exhibition and programmatic endeavors. The broader mission is to assist in supporting the scholarly needs of the Smithsonian Institution as a whole, as well as independent researchers who also utilize the library’s resources and services. A built-from-scratch collection still very much in the growing phase, the library is integrated with public spaces and displays a rotating exhibition of items from the library collection. Further information is available on the library’s website: National Museum of African American History & Culture Library

Shauna Collier is the head librarian for the National Museum of African American History & Culture, charged with managing the day-to-day operations of the two-person library, which include administrative, programmatic, and supervisory responsibilities, as well as creating and administering library policies, services, and outreach efforts. Prior to her current position at the Smithsonian, Ms. Collier was the Sonja Haynes Stone Center Librarian for Black Culture and History at UNC-Chapel Hill. Other previous positions include: Librarian, Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum; Reference Librarian, Live Oak Public Library (Savannah GA); Records Librarian, EPA Region IV (Atlanta); and Archivist, The Herndon Home Museum (Atlanta). Ms. Collier received a B.A. in Marketing from Jackson State University, and a Master of Information & Library Studies from the University of Alabama.

The library is on the Museum’s 2nd floor, in the far right corner of the interactive exhibition space. Ms. Collier will meet us outside the library to discuss the rare-book exhibition and then take us inside for a further look at rare and historic books in African American history and literature.

For those who want to stay on, lunch will follow (pay your own way) at the Museum’s Sweet Home Café

We look forward to seeing you!
