Books Go to War: Armed Services Editions
By Abby Yochelson
The Armed Services Editions (ASEs) were an outstanding achievement of the Army Library Service during World War II. Guided by an organization of publishers, booksellers, authors, and librarians known as the Council on Books in Wartime, this publishing effort produced, from 1943 to 1947, over 122 million paperbacks for free distribution to U.S. service members.
Abby Yochelson retired from the Library of Congress several months ago after 34 years as a Reference Specialist in the Main Reading Room. Her subject specialty there was English and American Literature. Abby also had the privilege of working for several months in the Rare Book and Special Collections Reading Room. This provided an opportunity to learn about some of the collections, such as the Armed Services Editions, in greater depth, and to enjoy frequent collaborations with the staff in the following years.
Join us in the Rosenwald Room (LJ-230) on the second floor of the Thomas Jefferson building at the Library of Congress as Abby shares the history and highlights of the Armed Services
Editions!
There will be a Q&A session at the end of the talk.
We hope you will join us!
